Treat the score as a repeatable signal
OpenFileTools measures local luminance edge variation. It is useful for sorting similar shots, but it does not know which subject should be sharp.
Understand false highs and lows
Noise and texture can raise an edge score. Shallow depth of field, smooth subjects, intentional motion, or soft rendering can lower it even when the image works artistically.
Inspect low-scoring images before deleting them
Use the metric to find candidates for closer inspection, then view the intended subject at 100% or at the target print size.
Combine sharpness with effective PPI
A sharp small file can still be under-resolved for a large print, while a high-resolution blurry file can still look soft. Both source detail and output sampling matter.
