Two thresholds with different meanings
Etsy says the first listing photo should be at least 635 pixels in width and height to avoid lower placement in search. It separately recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels in width and height for quality.

- 2,000 px is the recommended high-resolution target.
- A smaller original should not be upscaled and mislabeled as newly detailed.
Plan for multiple thumbnail crops
Etsy displays listing imagery in several shapes. A centered subject with breathing room is safer than a tight edge-to-edge crop, especially for the first photo.
- Keep the most important detail near the center.
- Preview square, portrait, and landscape crops.
- Use a consistent shape across a listing for a cohesive gallery.
Format, transparency, and color
Etsy supports several image formats but warns that transparent PNG areas can appear black. A JPG export with a deliberate background avoids accidental transparency.
- Work in sRGB for predictable storefront color.
- Keep the original layered or transparent file as a backup.
- Check the final listing preview after upload.
