Plan for the announced 500 × 500 minimum
Google announced that all product images will need to be at least 500 × 500 pixels when enforcement begins January 31, 2027. Warnings appear before the enforcement date, so fixing smaller source imagery early avoids a future cleanup project.
Respect the maximums too
Product images must stay within Google's documented maximum of 64 megapixels and 16 MB. Bigger is not automatically better once an image becomes unnecessarily heavy.
- Use the largest useful original rather than an upscaled thumbnail.
- Keep the entire product accurate and visible.
- Do not add promotional text, watermarks, or borders to the submitted product image.
High resolution and product fill are performance signals
Google recommends images around 1,500 × 1,500 or above when possible, and its guidance also discusses product framing around 75%–90% of the image. Automated occupancy can only estimate this, especially for white or reflective products.
The image must still match the feed
A technically valid image can still be wrong if it shows a different color, material, pattern, customization state, or product than the feed record. That relationship needs human or catalog-system validation.
