Choose format by workflow
MP3 is broadly portable, M4A/AAC is efficient on modern devices, WAV is editing-friendly PCM, FLAC is lossless compression, and OGG/Opus is useful in open web workflows.
Lossless does not mean restored
Converting an MP3 into WAV or FLAC stops further codec loss in later steps, but it cannot recreate frequencies already removed by MP3 encoding.
Keep sample rate intentional
Avoid unnecessary resampling when the destination does not require it. Higher sample rates do not automatically improve a lower-quality source.
Use measured outputs
Compare bytes, duration and basic track facts after conversion rather than assuming one format is always smaller.
