How to Create a Multi-Size Favicon

Prepare a legible source image and generate a proportionally fitted ICO with standard small icon sizes.

Choose a simple source image

Use a high-resolution PNG, JPG, or WebP with a bold silhouette. Fine text and delicate detail usually disappear at 16 pixels.

Preserve the complete logo

Contain fitting scales proportionally and uses transparent padding instead of stretching or silently cropping the source.

Include standard ICO sizes

A multi-image favicon.ico can contain 16, 32, and 48 pixel versions so browsers choose an appropriate raster size.

Test on light and dark browser chrome

Transparent logos need sufficient contrast in varied browser and operating-system themes.

Account for browser caching

Favicons are aggressively cached. Verify the linked filename and markup, then use a fresh profile or cache-busting filename during review.
