How to Format a Professional Cover Letter

Structure sender and recipient information, date, salutation, opening, evidence-focused body, closing, and signature.

What this document is for

A cover letter connects your factual experience to a specific role. Include sender and recipient details, the date, a professional salutation, a concise opening, a body that uses your own evidence, and a clear closing.

Fields and decisions that matter

Keep paragraphs readable and avoid repeating the full resume. Explain relevant motivation and examples in your own words, check names and company details, then review line wrapping and page length in the live preview.

Customize and review the live preview

Open the related template, complete required fields, add or remove repeatable rows where available, and reorder entries when sequence matters. Choose A4 or US Letter, orientation, typography, spacing, accent color, and a restrained style. The preview updates from current tab state and renders user content as text rather than HTML.

  • Check names, dates, references, quantities, and totals.
  • Remove empty optional content instead of leaving unexplained placeholders.
  • Review long text and tables for page breaks before saving.

Important limitations

This is a formatting tool, not an AI writer or job-fit evaluator. It does not invent achievements, check claims, submit applications, or guarantee a response.

Save a reviewed PDF privately

Choose Print / Save PDF, select the browser's PDF destination, confirm paper size and orientation, and inspect the saved file before sharing it. Browser pagination and printer scaling can vary. OpenFileTools does not upload, persist, or add document contents to a URL, and closing the tab clears the working state.
