Make criteria observable
Useful criteria describe evidence a student can demonstrate. Avoid vague labels that are difficult to score consistently.
Weight criteria deliberately
Weights should reflect instructional priorities, not simply make every row equal.
Use performance levels consistently
Describe what distinguishes excellent, proficient, developing and beginning work for each criterion.
Review the rubric before assigning work
A rubric is strongest when students can see the evaluation criteria before submission.
