What Is EXIF Metadata and Does Your Photo Contain It?

Learn which details may be embedded in a photo and inspect them without uploading the file.

EXIF is information attached to image data

Cameras and phones may store technical details alongside visible pixels. This can help software rotate and organize images, but some fields can be private when shared publicly.

Location tags require care

GPS metadata can reveal where a photo was captured. OpenFileTools warns when recognized location tags exist, but does not plot coordinates or send metadata to a map service.

Metadata formats vary

JPEG, PNG, and WebP can store different metadata blocks. A viewer can report recognized fields without guaranteeing that every proprietary tag has been decoded.
