Etsy Thumbnail Cropping Guide for Listing Photos

Frame Etsy listing photos so important product details survive square, landscape, and mobile thumbnail crops.

One photo can appear in several shapes

Etsy uses listing photos in search, shop grids, listing pages, and mobile layouts. Those placements may crop the same source differently, so an edge-to-edge composition can lose essential product detail even when its dimensions are excellent.

  • Keep the primary subject near the center.
  • Leave deliberate breathing room.
  • Avoid placing text or small features at the extreme edges.

Treat the first photo as a thumbnail

The first listing photo should communicate the product quickly at a small size. Etsy separately describes a 635-pixel width-and-height threshold for the first photo and recommends 2,000 pixels in both dimensions for quality.

  • Use a clear silhouette and uncluttered background.
  • Check that the product remains recognizable when small.

Preview before publishing

Export proportionally, then test a square center crop and the shapes used by your shop theme. A better source composition is usually preferable to adding large amounts of padding after the photograph is taken.
