Shopify’s documented image limits
Shopify permits product and collection images up to 5,000 by 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels, with files smaller than 20 MB. These are upload boundaries, not instructions to make every image maximum size.
- Keep images within the pixel and file-size limits.
- Use the highest useful detail without shipping unnecessary bytes.
- Let Shopify’s image service deliver suitable storefront formats.
Why 2,048 × 2,048 is useful
Shopify says 2,048 by 2,048 usually displays best for square product images. It is a practical quality target, not a universal requirement for every theme or content type.
- Start with a sufficiently detailed original.
- Test how your theme crops featured images.
- Use alternate aspect ratios intentionally rather than accidentally.
Consistency often matters more than maximum size
Product grids look more polished when featured images share an aspect ratio and similar product scale. A technically large image can still create a messy catalog when its framing differs from every neighboring product.
- Choose one featured-image ratio for a collection.
- Keep product scale visually consistent.
- Compress results to reduce catalog upload time.
