Resize Shopify product photos without forcing every image square
Use proportional longest-side resizing when the source shape already suits your storefront, or choose a square canvas deliberately when your catalog needs one. Shopify's 2,048 × 2,048 guidance applies to square product imagery; it is not a rule that every product photo must be square.
- A 2,048 × 1,365 proportional image can be valid.
- A square canvas is a merchandising choice, not a universal upload requirement.
- Enlarging a small source changes dimensions but cannot restore missing detail.
Separate Shopify product-image limits from recommendations
Shopify documents product and collection images up to 5,000 × 5,000 pixels or 25 megapixels and smaller than 20 MB. OpenFileTools measures the source and the local result against those product-media boundaries while keeping the square recommendation clearly labeled as guidance.
- Review both pixel dimensions and megapixels.
- Keep the original source as your archive copy.
- Test the final image in the actual theme because collection cards and product pages can crop differently.
Do not over-compress solely for storefront delivery
Shopify's image guidance says images do not need to be manually compressed before upload and its delivery system can choose optimized formats for shoppers. Use local compression only when you have a separate file-size or asset-workflow reason, and compare the visible result before replacing a better source.
