Shopify Square vs. Portrait Product Images

Choose a storefront image ratio based on product presentation and theme behavior rather than a false universal square requirement.

Square images simplify many product grids

A consistent square set can align grid cards and give products equal visual weight. Shopify's 2,048 × 2,048 guidance is useful for square product imagery, but it does not make every non-square image deficient.

  • Use square when uniform grid rhythm is the priority.
  • Keep subject scale consistent across products.

Portrait images can show vertical products better

Clothing, bottles, art, and other tall products may use the frame more efficiently in portrait orientation. The tradeoff is that themes can crop portrait images differently in collection cards or social previews.

  • Check theme focal-point controls.
  • Preview collection and product templates.

Choose a rule for featured images

Mixing ratios without planning can make a catalog look uneven. Select a primary ratio for featured images, while allowing secondary media to use shapes that explain the product more effectively.
